Rie Heffron, AMERICA'S TOUGHEST JOBS reality show contestant: Mr. Media Interview
Recreated peacock logo not used universally un...Image via WikipediaRie Heffron (her first name is pronounced lee-ay) is a 34-year-old product specialist from Woodland Hills, CA. She went on the new NBC reality series “America’s Toughest Jobs” to prove she isn’t just another pretty face—even if she really does have a very pretty face.

The show really put her through her paces, too, and she’s here to talk about it.

Rory Freedman and Kim Barnouin, SKINNY BITCH diet authors: Mr. Media Interview
Book cover of Book cover via AmazonSorry folks. I’m not quite ready to start.

Skinny Bitch. SKINNY Bitch. Skinny BITCH.

Just saying the name of my guests’ book series is a little difficult for a guy who doesn’t like to cuss in mixed company. I keep telling myself that today’s show is a license to let go, but it isn’t easy.

Rory Freedman and Kim Barnouin (pronounced bar-new-in) are the co-authors of three books whose titles start with Skinny Bitch: the original Skinny Bitch, the first sequel, Skinny Bitch in the Kitch, and the latest release, Skinny Bitch: Bun in the Oven.

The books are, at their core, diet guides with a strong vegan slant. But what gets your attention is the tone, the attitude, the cold, hard slap n the face. I’ve written or co-authored nine books – including The Corporate Athlete, with Jack Groppel – but I never imagined I could get away with titling a chapter, “Don’t Be a Pussy.”

Joey Luthman, WEEDS, AN AMERICAN CAROL actor: Mr. Media Interview
The cast of Weeds circa Season 2, Left to Righ...Image via WikipediaI hate it when people confuse actors with the characters they play. For example, just because 11-year-old Joey Luthman appears on the Showtime sitcom “Weeds” doesn’t mean he’s a pothead.

At least I hope not!

And just because he has a role in the new movie An American Carol alongside Kelsey Grammer, Leslie Nielsen, Dennis Hopper and James Woods doesn’t mean he’s a conservative right-winger.

Not that there’s anything wrong with it.

"A Spirited Life" Review: A must for any library about comic book history (My Pull List)
"Will Eisner: A Spirited Life was written by Bob Andelman and published by M Press in 2005. I saw Andelman do a presentation about his biography at MegaCon in 2006. I finally bought it last year and was not disappointed. The book provides a window into the early years of the comic book industry. If you would like to learn about his creation The Spirit, the subject of Frank Miller's movie adaption due to be released in theaters on Christmas of this year, this is the book to check out. The book follows Eisner's varied career, both in and out of comics. Beginning just before the comic book scare of the 1950's, Eisner left comics to produce P. S., the Army maintenance magazine, which contained a comic book insert that would illustrate a different equipment maintenance procedure each month. And it explores Eisner's contribution to the evolution of the graphic novel. This book is a must for any library about comic book history."

Bob Gruen, NEW YORK DOLLS: PHOTOGRAPHS photographer: Mr. Media Interview
Book cover of Book cover via AmazonWelcome to another edition of Mr. Media’s Kollege of Musical Knowledge. Today, I’ll test your familiarity with the roots of punk rock music with a very special guest, photographer Bob Gruen.

Bob just published a new collection of his classic photos, this time capturing the wild times of the original New York punk band, the New York Dolls, which once upon a time starred David Johansen, Johnny Thunders, Billy Murcia and Arthur Kane. The book – with its shocking pink cover – is titled, simply, New York Dolls: Photographs.

If you know anything about the Dolls, you’ll want this book on your coffee table. It’ll be a good bookend for other Gruen collections, including John Lennon: The New York Years and The Clash.

Gruen’s pretty busy these days; he attended the opening of an exhibition of his photos at the Liss Gallery, 140 Yorkville Avenue in Toronto. And from October 11 through Nov 2, Gruen will have his first solo exhibition in Los Angeles at the Morrison Hotel Gallery, 7517 W Sunset Blvd, (near the Guitar Center). Gruen will attend the opening on October 11th to sign copies of New York Dolls: Photographs.

Michele Cameron, MOMENTS OF CLARITY... author: Mr. Media Interview
Romance is the top genre in fiction with more than $1.47 billion dollars in sales for 2007. The average romance reader is voracious and goes through 6-7 books per month.

Within the genre, there are many specializations, including tonight’s topic: romance novels written by and for African-American readers.

My guest is Michele Cameron, author of Never Say Never and the hot-off-the-press Moments of Clarity… Also joining us is her editor at Genesis Press, Deborah Schumacher. Deborah is a published author herself; her novel, The Air Between Us was published earlier this year under her pen name, Deborah Johnson, by HarperCollins.

Bruce Davison, KNIGHT RIDER actor: Mr. Media Interview
Knight Rider Press ReleaseImage by mike_1630 via FlickrActor Bruce Davison already owns a chunk of pop culture—he was devious Senator Robert Kelly in the first two X-Men movies and has appeared in episodes of everything from “Lost” and “Battlestar Galactica” to “Terminator” and “The L Word.”

So it can’t be too much of a surprise that when the producers of NBC’s new “Knight Rider” series wanted a genre veteran to lend credibility to the show, they, too, turned to Davison.

Mike Lynch, HEYKIDSCOMICS.com magazine cartoonist: Mr. Media Interview
Regular Mr. Media listeners know that I have a special place in my heart for cartoonists and comics people.

I admire their creativity and talent, of course, but I also envy their ability to wake up every day and invent a living from whole cloth.

And probably no one in this creative class has a greater challenge before him or her than the freelance magazine cartoonist earning one paycheck at a time by producing single panel cartoons for a variety of editors.

Mike Lynch is one of those guys.

Check out Lynch’s work on his web site, HeyKidsComics.com while you listen to this interview.

Lynch, who lives in the foothills of the White Mountains in rural New Hampshire with his wife and three cats, freelances for advertising agencies, calendars, books and so on. He’s also on the board of the National Cartoonists Society.

Kirk Douglas, LET'S FACE IT, THE RAGMAN'S SON author, actor: Mr. Media Interview
Cropped screenshot of Kirk Douglas from the tr...Image via WikipediaActor Kirk Douglas will be 92 in December. 92! I’m roughly half his age and from everything I’ve heard about him of late, he’s got twice the energy and drive that I do.

Every generation of the last 60 years can easily point to a favorite Kirk Douglas movie, whether it’s Champion, Paths of Glory, Lust for Life, Spartacus, or Tough Guys. As for me, I’ve always had a fondness for the cartoon silliness of The Villain.

His latest autobiographical book, Let's Face It: 90 Years of Living, Loving and Learning was just released in paperback. It joins an already crowded bookshelf of memories, including The Ragman’s Son, Climbing the Mountain: My Search for Meaning, and My Stroke of Luck.

Harvey Frommer, REMEMBERING YANKEE STADIUM author: Mr. Media Interview
Book cover of Book cover via AmazonThere are two memories of Yankee Stadium that I hold dear.

The first dates back to 1967. I was six years old and my grandfather took me to the House That Ruth Built for the first time to see my idol, Mickey Mantle. There are two things I remember about that night: The Mick hit a home run but I was mostly scared to death being way up high in the upper deck.

My second memory is of the last time I was at the stadium, June 16, 1997. My wife ordered tickets for us to see the first ever interleague game between the Yankees and their crosstown rival, the Mets. It was the first game that would ever count between the two teams. We flew up from Florida just for the game.

By then, I was more a Mets fan than a Yankees fan and, even more, a Tampa Bay Rays fan. It was as electric an atmosphere as I could imagine any World Series game might offer.

But my recollections are a drop in the bucket compared with the ones collected by Harvey Frommer in his new coffee table book, Remembering Yankee Stadium. It is packed not just with oral histories collected from some of the greatest Yankees players, managers, sports writers and fans, but is also filled with awesome photos from decades of historic moments.
